Literacy Blogs

Picture
Literacy is about the message itself and the tools used to communicate that message. The Information Age presents new challenges in discerning those messages from the packages they are delivered in. The butterfly mobile was created using the pages of an old anatomy book and a book of fairy tales. Information is now repackaged, "mashed" up and distributed in a myriad of evolving ways and means. This process often obscures original intent to a mere shadow of itself. A hollow informatic skeleton. This shade, however, can also operate as a refreshing tide of innovation, a new take on human consciousness. The medium becomes the message. Literacy unravels the shadows.

This blog addresses two professional interests: media literacy and outdoor education.

Media Blog: First served as an interactive tool for students, staff, and community members of the Sabin and ACCESS Academy Schools of the Portland Public School District, then as a communication medium to participate in the life of Valley Catholic's Middle and High School Library. It now stands to deliver conference presentation materials, commentary on current trends in the library profession, reader's advisory and literacy tools for librarians and educators.
Outdoor Education Blog: Includes an archive of events conducted by the Valley Catholic High School (Beaverton, Oregon) Outdoor Club during the 2010-2011 school year. Remains to serve up research and instructional tools relating to outdoor and experiential education.

A truly good book teaches me better than to read it. I must soon lay it down, and commence living on its hint. What I began by reading, I must finish by acting. ~Henry David Thoreau
